Switching with GoSwitch – a Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

Go to the online form.

1. What are you looking to save on?*

Select the type of energy plans you would like to compare from the dropdown box. The options are Electricity, Gas, or Both. “Both” refers to Dual Fuel plans, which means you receive electricity and gas from the same provider.

2. Moving home?*

If you’re moving house, click the ‘YES’ button. You will be redirected to the Moving Home page.

Here, enter your details, then click the ‘Send’ button – one of our friendly price analysts will contact you by phone with the information you require, and arrange your new connection in minutes.

3. Would you like to switch over the phone?

If you have any questions, or would prefer one of our price analysts conduct the price comparison and switch for you, select ‘YES’, then the ‘Click Here to GO button’.

Enter your details on the dropdown window, click the ‘Send’ button and one of our price analysts will call you with the information you require, and arrange the switch in minutes.

4. What is your postcode?*

Enter your current four-digit postcode.

5. Please type the text you see in this box*

Enter the letters and/or numbers as they appear in the bottom field.

You can now proceed to Step 2 by clicking the ‘NEXT’ button.

Step 2

The information you will be asked to enter in Step 2 will depend on the energy type selected in Step 1.

Step 2 – Electricity only

1. Do you know what kind of electricity meter you have?*

The easiest way to determine what kind of meter you have is to look at a recent bill. If your bill shows that you’re being charged at a single rate per kWh, you most likely have an ‘All Day’ meter.

If your bill shows you’re being charged at different rates for Peak and Off Peak periods, you have an ‘Off Peak’ meter.

If you have had a smart meter installed, select ‘Smart Meter’.

If you do not know, you can select ‘Unsure’.

2. Who is your current retailer?*

Please select the company name of your current energy retailer from the dropdown box.

The default energy retailer for your area has been pre-selected for you so – if you’re unsure – you can move on to the next question.

3. What plan are you on? *

Please select the name of the plan you’re currently on (you can find this on your bill).

If you cannot find a plan ‘name’ on your bill, this probably means you are on the default rate (usually the most expensive).

If you are on the default rate, are unsure of the name of your plan or don’t have your bill with you, you can move on to the next question – “regulated tariff” or “standard offer” has been pre-selected for you.

4. How often do you receive your bills? *

Please indicate how many times per year you receive an electricity bill.

If you have your bill is with you, you can determine your bill frequency by checking the billing period.

As most homes receive their bill every 3 months, the ‘quarterly’ option has been pre-selected for you.

5. How much energy did you use in the selected bill period? *

Please specify how much energy you consumed during the billing period.

You can enter usage measured in dollars in the ‘Energy used in dollars’ field (digits only, without the $ sign) OR in KWhs in the ‘Energy used in KWhs’ field.

Please enter your consumption either in dollars OR in KWhs – not both.  If you are not sure of an exact amount, you may enter an approximate figure for that billing period.

Click the ‘Calculate Savings’ button to find a range of electricity plans available in your area.

You can now go to Step 3

Step 2 – Gas only

1. Who is your current retailer?*

Please select the company name of your current gas retailer.

The default energy retailer for your area has been pre-selected for you – if you are unsure, you can simply proceed to the next this question.

2. What plan are you on?*

From the options in the dropdown box, please select your plan name (you can find this on your bill).  If you cannot find a plan ‘name’ on your bill, you are on the default gas rate (usually the most expensive in your area).

If you are on the default rate, are unsure of your plan name or don’t have your bill at hand, you can skip this question. “Standard offer” or “Regulated tariff” has been pre-selected for you.

3. How often do you receive your bills?*

Please indicate how often you receive a gas bill per year.

If you have your gas bill at hand, you can identify your bill frequency by referring to the billing period.

Most homes receive their bill every two months, so the ’bi-monthly’ option has been pre-selected.

4. How much energy did you use in the selected bill period? *

Please indicate how much energy you used during the billing period.

You can indicate your consumption measured either in dollars OR in MJs by entering the amount in the ‘Energy used in dollars’ or ‘Energy used in MJs’ fields respectively. If you’re not sure, you can enter an approximate figure.

Click the ‘Calculate Savings’ button to find a range of gas plans in your area.

You can now go to Step 3

Step 2 – Dual Fuel

“Dual Fuel” means that both your electricity and gas are sold to you by the same energy retailer. This doesn’t necessarily mean you will receive a single bill for both your electricity and gas, as meter readings may happen at different times.

1. Who is your current retailer?*

Please select the company name of your current gas and electricity retailer from the options in the dropdown box.

Your area’s default energy retailer has been pre-selected for you.  If unsure you can simply proceed to the next question.

2. What plan are you on? *

From the options in the dropdown box, please select your current plan name (you can find this on your bill).  If your bill does not indicate a plan name, this probably means you are on the default rate  which is usually the most expensive rate in your area.

If you are on the default rate or are unsure of your plan name, you can skip this question. “Regulated tariff” or “Standing offer” has been pre-selected for you.

3. How often do you receive your bills? *

Please indicate how many electricity bills you receive in a year. You can identify your bill frequency by looking at the billing period on your bill.

Most homes receive their bill every three months, so the ‘quarterly’ option has been pre-selected for you.

4. Do you know what kind of electricity meter you have?*

The easiest way to determine what kind of meter you have is to look at the back of your bill – if you’re being charged at a single rate per kWh, you most likely have an ‘All Day’ meter.

If you’re being charged at different rates per kWh for Peak and Off Peak periods, you have an ‘Off Peak’ meter.

If you have had a Smart meter installed, select ‘Smart Meter’.

If you’re not sure, you can select ‘Unsure’.

5. How much energy did you use in the selected bill period? *

Please indicate the amount of energy you consumed during the billing period (enter gas and electricity usage amounts separately).

You can enter your consumption either in dollars (i.e. the amount of your energy bill for the period), OR in kWhs for electricity and MJs for gas (you can find this information on your bill). If you’re not sure of the exact amount, you can enter an indicative figure for the period.

You can now click the ‘Calculate Savings’ button to look for a range of dual fuel plans in your area.

Step 3

Based on the information provided in Steps 1 & 2, range of energy plans in your area have now been compared and ranked from cheapest to most expensive (based solely on price). The cheapest plan will appear first in the list.

This page includes further information regarding each plan, including:

  • Retailer Name: the name of the retailer offering the plan.
  • Plan Name: the name identifying the plan.
  • Description: a high-level description of what we believe are the more important terms associated with the plan.
  • Estimated Customer Annual Bill in $: our dollar estimate of your annual energy bill should you switch to this plan (based on the information entered in Step 2, with the assumption that your energy usage remains the same).
  • Estimated Annual Savings in $: our estimate of how much you can save in a year by switching to this plan from your existing plan.
  • Percentage Saved: the estimated percentage savings to be made by switching to this plan in percentage points.

You can now switch to the plan of your choice, by simply clicking the ‘GoSwitch’ button beside the plan.

Plans that have an ‘Enquire’ button require you contact the retailer directly to switch.

Step 4

This is the final step!

To complete your application, please enter the required details, and then click ‘Proceed’.

Congratulations! Your request to switch has been lodged.

We will forward your application to your chosen retailer who will finalise the transfer so that you can start saving money on energy as quickly as possible. You do not need to do anything else.

If you are switching an electricity or gas account at your current address, your new energy retailer will contact you within two business days (by phone or email) to welcome you, answer any questions and – subject to your approval – continue with the switch.

The switch will take place at the time of your next meter reading.

If you are moving home, your new energy retailer will contact you within one business day to welcome you, answer any questions and arrange the new connection subject to your approval.  The energy retailer requires at least 2 business days to establish a new connection.
