Helping Australians pay less for electricity and gas
When Ben Freund moved from the Melbourne suburb of Armadale to Fitzroy in 2008 and had to reconnect his electricity, he realised that even though all electricity is the same, it was nearly impossible to compare prices acrossa range retailers. With a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University and ten years consulting experience in marketing, publishing and business, it occurred to Ben that if software was developed to do all the calculations, consumers would be able to make informed decisions that save them serious money.
Ben did some research and found out that even though deregulation meant that consumers in Vic, NSW, QLD and SA had a choice of electricity provider, most people were paying default rates, and therefore more than they have to. There were also thousands of doorknockers trying to make people switch providers based on a pitch they’ve just received at their front door. Consumers didn’t have any tools to really assess whether an offer was good or not.
That’s how Ben came to launch GoSwitch.com.au in May 2008, backed by a team of highly experienced business people and investors behind other successful online businesses including seek.com.au, and Yahoo7.
GoSwitch.com.au is now one of the leading price comparison websites for electricity and gas, and in addition to providing transparent pricing to consumers from a range of providers, it has led some retailers to offer exclusive discounts to GoSwitch.com.au customers.
The service is fast and free to use. With just five minutes and a copy of their last bill, Australian consumers can make a price comparison of a range of plans and providers, and switch to another plan if they want to.
